Over the years, SQL Consulting, Inc. has provided its services to many companies,
small and large. We offer cost-effective solutions to almost any size of enterprise.
Here are some examples of the companies we serve.
Hilton Hotels,
Orlando, FL
Hilton Grand Vacations is the vacation time-share division of Hilton
Hotels Corporation. Their development team did such an outstanding job
developing the SQL Server application used to run the time-share business that the hospitality
industry giant decided to expand the application's use to other divisions
and to many, many more users.
Wisely, Hilton management decided to seek the advice of SQL Server performance
experts regarding the scalability issues they might encounter and to
optimize application performance before opening up access to many more users than the application
was originally designed to support. SQL Consulting, Inc. was called in and identified
many potential problems in hardware, application code, indexing and server configuration. We
resolved many of the issues and provided assistance to Hilton's development
team in resolving others.
This pro-active and collaborative approach made
for a much smoother transition than otherwise might have
occurred.
US Department of Agriculture
For years, the US Department of Agriculture used a SQL Server based application
to handle contract management for their Agricultural Research Service.
Recently they expanded its use to many other offices. When the
number of users jumped from a few dozen to several hundred, performance
quickly deteriorated. Realizing that the issues were more complex than
could be addressed by
standard database tuning techniques, agency IT management decided that
they needed outside expertise.
The budget for the project was small. Our first task was to identify specific
optimizations that would result in the greatest performance benefits
at the least cost. Our second was to leverage the expertise in their
own IT
group to aid in the project.
The results pleased everyone. Users were pleased because, in some critical
areas, we were able to reduce application response times from minutes
to seconds. In general, application performance was improved dramatically
across the board. Managers
were pleased because user productivity
was improved to a corresponding degree and because all of this was accomplished
within tight budget constraints.
In the real world, there is always a budget constraint. Solving
a performance problem within the budget requires careful analysis to
determine where
efforts can be applied in the most cost-effective manner. That, in turn,
requires
the kind of experience and knowledge we acquired by years of specialization.
Panda Express
Panda Restaurant Group, the parent company of Panda Express and Hibachi-San
Grill has almost 1000 locations covering 34 states and Puerto Rico. When
they recently deployed a new SQL Server-based
point of sale system to connect remote locations to corporate headquarters,
they called on SQL Consulting to help optimize performance in their high
volume system.
New York Philharmonic, New York, NY
Some musicians wait all their lives for a call from the Philharmonic.
However, when the New York Philharmonic called us, it was not for our
musical skills,
it was for our
expertise in tuning of another sort.
The web has become an increasingly important part of the New York Philharmonic’s reservation and ticketing operations. More patrons are coming to their website to find out what’s happening with one of the world’s finest and most renowned symphony orchestras.
Concerts sometimes sell out very quickly after being announced and that leads to intense bursts of activity on their website. Looking ahead to the anticipated growth in this area of their operations, they wanted to make sure they were ready for more frequent bursts of activity involving higher numbers of web users. They called in SQL Consulting to work with their IT staff and vendors to make sure their system could handle projected loads. We also assisted their staff in creating a robust disaster recovery plan.
Working in concert, we achieved our goal of enabling web patrons to enjoy
world-class web performance and to complete their event reservations prestissimo.
Yellow Cab, Phoenix, AZ
Faced with a big growth in business, Yellow Cab of Phoenix wanted to insure that their database
systems would scale to meet projected business levels. They called SQL Consulting to work with their
own IT department to insure the scalability of their systems and to fix some existing performance
issues.
U.S. Auto Parts, Los Angeles, CA
U.S. Auto Parts Network, Inc. is the nation’s leading Internet direct marketer
of automotive aftermarket collision replacement parts and accessories. Receiving
more than twelve million Web
site visitors annually, U.S. Auto Parts carries over 26,000 part numbers, representing
over 75,000 unique products in their inventory.
SQL Consulting, Inc. was originally called in to solve performance problems
in their ecommerce and warehouse management systems caused by their rapid
increase in business volume. In a short time, we had the database systems
performing well again. The management team then asked us to help
them address longer term issues. These
included data security, future scalability and high availability.
We are currently engaged in a collaborative effort with US Auto Parts to
insure ongoing performance and stability in their database environment.
Magna-Intier, Novi, MI
Magna-Intier is a leading global supplier of technologically advanced automotive
components, systems and complete modules. Intier is the division of Magna that
supplies interior subassemblies to the
automotive industry. Their assembly lines must be precisely sequenced to the
main
assembly line in their
customer’s plant so that a specific subassembly arrives at the right place at
exactly the right time to be integrated into the specific automobile for which
it is intended. Failures in sequencing are
extremely expensive. The database that controls this activity must be fast and
highly reliable.
Although Intier’s SQL Server database was performing adequately for the existing load, they wanted some
assurance that it would scale to handle higher volumes of traffic. They called us in for performance
analysis and tuning. We also examined and made recommendations concerning their high availability and
data redundancy architecture to ensure that a hardware failure would not shut down their assembly line
and that their data was safe and easily recoverable in the event of disaster.
Nautilus Group, Vancouver WA
With such labels as Bowflex, Nautilus, Stairmaster, Schwinn Exercise
Systems, The Nautilus Group is number one in the manufacture
and sale of home exercise equipment. Their business runs on SQL Server. We assisted them with
the transition from their legacy database systems on older versions of SQL Server
to an entirely new system built on SQL Server 2000.
Washington Dept of Corrections
The State of Washington, Department of Corrections uses a SQL Server-based
application for pesonnel scheduling at all correctional facilities statewide.
Over time the number of users and the quantity of data in the system had increased
while performance had degraded. Department management decided to bring in SQL
Server, Inc. performance specialists to work with the application vendor to
improve current performance and allow it to scale to meet future needs.
The budget was small and our first priority was to identify areas where
we could make the most difference in the least amount of time. We identified
the most poorly performing application code. Working with the vendor,
we created new indexing schemes and reworked a relatively small amount
of SQL code. The result was dramatic performance improvements in many
critical areas of the application.
The limited budget did not allow for a perfect solution but both we
and our client are very happy with the results achieved within the budget
constraints.
State of Oregon, Public Employee Retirement System
PERS manages over $41 billion dollars in assets. Faced with
a complete reorganization of the retirement system by the state legislature,
the agency had to accomplish a wholesale modification of their database infrastructure
in a short amount of time. They looked to SQL Consulting for the Microsoft
SQL Server expertise they needed to meet the deadlines set for them by the
new legislation. Although their database systems are extremely complex, the
deadlines were met and, although state legislatures
are notoriously difficult to please, they were satisfied with it.
SQL Consulting, Inc. was proud to play a small role in a very large and challenging
project.

the SQL Server database supporting Aplia's website is often under heavy
load. SQL Consulting works with Aplia's own development team to insure
that the database performs at peak efficiency around the clock and that it will scale to meet growing demand.
McKissock
LP, Warren PA
McKissock LP is the premier appraisal and real estate continuing education
provider in the US. Every year they hold approximately 1,200 classes
for tens of thousands of real estate professionals in
various locations across North America.
By early 2004, the demands of their rapidly growing business had exceeded the
capacity of their legacy data system. The system that had worked well for a
small company
was simply too slow and unstable for the company they had become.
They called on SQL Consulting, Inc. to help them make a rapid transition to a
faster and more robust database environment built on SQL Server.
The entire process was completed quickly and the benefits were immediate.
Speed and stability were impoved dramatically. No user re-training was necessary
because their existing database applications were re-used with very little
modification.
